Registering in Ghent with sufficient financial means

What is it about?

As an EU citizen, you benefit from the right of free movement. This means you can also apply for registration in Belgium if you have sufficient financial means. These funds don’t necessarily have to be your own – they can come from someone else, such as your partner. It doesn’t matter where your income comes from.

What are the conditions?

  • You live at a private address in Ghent
  • You are an EU citizen
  • You have sufficient financial means means, so you won’t need to rely on Belgian social assistance (OCMW)
  • You must have health insurance

How much does it cost?

Starting your file in Ghent is free of charge.
For the residence card, you pay:

  • Standard procedure: 30 euro
  • Urgent procedure: 133 euro

What do I need?

  • Your valid identity card or passport
  • Health insurance
  • Proof of sufficient financial means means

The minimum reference amount is based on the Belgian social integration income.

What are the steps?

  1. Make an appointment (Dutch) with the Migration Office.
  2. At the appointment, you will receive proof of registration.
  3. The police will check your address.
  4. You will receive an invitation (link) by email to apply for your residence card or to submit additional proofs of your job search. Using this link, you can make an appointment to apply for your EU card or to submit job proofs.
  5. You collect your residence card at the location where you applied for it.
    You do not need to make an appointment for this, except at the Wijkkantoor Rabot.
