Registering in Ghent as an EU job seeker
Even if you are still looking for a job, you must register. Read more about it on this page.
What is it about?
EU citizens enjoy the free movement of persons. This allows you to look for work in Belgium. You can start your job search without registering, and if you find a job, you can request a BelgianIDpro number. If you plan to work and live in Belgium for more than 3 months, you must register.
What are the conditions?
- You live at a private address in Ghent.
- You are an EU citizen.
- You are looking for work.
How much does it cost?
Opening your file in Ghent is free.
For the residence card, you pay

What do I need?
At the start of your procedure:
- Your valid identity card or passport.
- Proof of registration with VDAB or job application proofs.
If you do not find work within 5 months
Provide Migration with proof as soon as possible that you have been applying regularly and that you have a reasonable chance of finding work. Do this online or make an appointment.
Migration will forward your evidence to the Immigration Office. If you do not provide sufficient proof, your application may be refused.
If you find work within 6 months
Provide Migration with proof as soon as possible if you find work within 6 months as an employee or self-employed person. Do this online or make an appointment.
If you meet the conditions, you will receive a residence card valid for 5 years.
What are the steps?
- Register online and follow all steps of the form to complete the application or make an appointment.
- You will receive a confirmation email once we have received your e-form.
- The police will check your address.
- Migration forwards your file to the Immigration Office
- You will receive an invitation (link) by email
to apply for your residence card or
to submit additional proofs of your job search. - You collect your residence card at the location where you applied for it.
You do not need to make an appointment for this, except at the Wijkkantoor Rabot.
