Staying in Ghent for more than 6 months as an EU Student

What is it about?

As an EU, EEA, or Swiss student, you can study in Belgium. If you stay in Belgium for more than 6 months, you must register with the municipality where you live. You can apply for an electronic residence card (EU card - Dutch).

What are the conditions?

  • You are an EU, EEA, or Swiss student.
  • You reside at the same private address in Ghent for at least 1 month.
  • You register online within 10 working days of arriving in Ghent.

How much does it cost?

The application is free.

For your residence card, you pay:

Regular procedure29 euros
Urgent procedure130 euros

What do I need?

  • Your valid identity card or passport
  • Your enrolment certificate from an educational institution in Belgium
  • Proof of health insurance covering all medical costs (valid for long-term stay in Belgium)

What are the steps?

  1. Register online within 10 days of arrival.
  2. After registration, you will receive a confirmation email.
  3. The police (Dutch) will verify your address.
  4. You will receive an invitation to apply for your residence card.
  5. Collect your residence card with the codes you receive at home.
