Staying in Ghent as a cross-border student

Are you a student living in France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, or Germany? Register with the municipality to get your residence document.

What is it about?

You can study in Ghent while keeping your main residence in France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, or Germany. You will return to your home country daily or weekly.

As a cross-border student, you will receive an Annex 33 (Dutch), but not an electronic residence card.

How much does it cost?

The application is free of charge.

What do I need?

Your enrolment certificate from the educational institution.

Are you an EU student? If so, please also provide your identity card.

Are you a non-EU student? If so, please also provide the following documents:

  • Your valid passport,
  • Your valid residence card from the neighbouring country,
  • Your enrolment certificate from the educational institution,
  • Proof of sufficient funds

What are the steps?

  1. Register online within 8 days of your arrival in Ghent.
  2. You will receive a confirmation email once your documents have been received.
  3. Your proof of registration (Annex 33) will be sent to your inbox after your documents have been processed.
