Ghent new president of Eurocities, Europe's largest city network
The presidency not only means extra visibility on the European stage, but also more impact on the European political agenda.

During the General Assembly held in Braga, Portugal, Ghent was elected as the new president of Eurocities. This city network unites 222 European cities from 38 countries. As president, Ghent can further advocate for the interests of these cities on the European political agenda.
Ghent has been a member of the Eurocities city network since 1998, serving continuously in the Executive Committee since 2009 and as Vice President since 2023. Today, during the General Assembly in Braga, Portugal, the city was elected as president for a two-year term. Mayor Mathias De Clercq will act as the de facto representative, while the City of Barcelona will serve as Vice President.
As President of Eurocities, Ghent will represent the interests of European cities, influencing European policy on issues such as housing, democratic values, climate, competitiveness and participation. This function also provides increased visibility on the European stage. Additionally, the network facilitates the exchange of experiences related to urban ambitions and practices.
With 75 percent of Europeans living in urban areas, our cities are at the forefront of Europe’s major challenges, from democratic resilience and climate action to social inclusion. Cities are not just part of the solution: they are leading the way. As President, I will therefore advocate for strong EU policies and targeted investments that meet the real needs of urban populations.
Eurocities unites 222 European cities, representing 150 million people in 38 countries. The network focuses on knowledge sharing, advocacy and networking around European policy. It brings together mayors, deputy mayors and civil servants to inspire each other.
