<http://schema.org/articleBody> "De stationsbuurt is een redelijk nieuwe wijk. Op het schilderij \u2018De Meersstraat in Gent\u2019 van Xavier De Cock zien deze wijk in 1862. Toen was dit nog landelijk gebied dat zich buiten de stadsmuren bevond. Heel het gebied viel onder de Sint-Pietersabdij. Er bevond zich een kleine parochie \u2018Sint-Pieters-Aalst\u2019. Na het slopen van de stadsomwallingen breidde Gent uit. Begin de 20ste eeuw werd dit gebied verder ge\u00FCrbaniseerd.\r\n\r\n1,7 km - 2300 stappen\n <div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--image paragraph--view-mode--full\">\n <figure>\n \n <div class=\"field field--name-field-media-image field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item\">\n\n<div>\n \n <div class=\"field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image-with-copyright field--label-hidden field__item\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" data-copyright=\"\u00A9VisitGent\" title=\"\u00A9VisitGent\" src=\"/sites/default/files/styles/paragraph_image/public/media/img/2021-02/Knipsel.PNG?itok=3kzuwy0b\" width=\"493\" height=\"357\" alt=\"De Meersstraat in Gent - Xavier De Cock\" class=\"image-style-paragraph-image\" loading=\"lazy\" />\n\n\n</div>\n \n </div>\n</div>\n \n <figcaption></figcaption>\n </figure>\n </div>\n\n <div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text paragraph--view-mode--full\">\n \n <div class=\"field field--name-field-heading field--type-heading field--label-hidden field__item\"><h2>Station Gent-Sint-Pieters</h2>\n</div>\n \n <div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-text field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\"><p><a href=\"https://visit.gent.be/nl/zien-doen/station-gent-sint-pieters-de-hub-van-gent\"> Het St. Pietersstation</a> werd in neo-gotische stijl ontworpen door architect Louis Cloquet (ook de ontwerper van o.a. <a href=\"https://visit.gent.be/nl/zien-doen/sint-michielsbrug-romantiek-gent\">St. Michielsbrug</a> en de <a href=\"https://visit.gent.be/nl/zien-doen/voormalig-postgebouw\">De Post</a> aan <a href=\"https://visit.gent.be/nl/zien-doen/een-gentse-koffie-op-de-korenmarkt\">de Korenmarkt</a>) en gebouwd in aanloop naar de wereldtentoonstelling van 1913.</p>\n\n<p>Een eerste versie van een houten St. Pietersstation stond in wat nu het Delphine Bo\u00EBl park is. Veiligheidsproblemen en een nakende wereldtentoonstelling noopten tot het bouwen van een groter station en het leggen van de sporen op een hoge berm met onder doorgangen voor de kruisende wegen. In het oorspronkelijk ontwerp van Cloquet was het stationsgebouw een verdieping hoger. De beoordelingscommissie vond dat je bij aankomst in Gent vanop het perron meteen de typische Gentse skyline met 3 torens moest kunnen zien. In de inkomhal is nog duidelijk dat het station een visitekaartje was voor de wereldtentoonstelling 1913. De belangrijkste Belgische steden worden er in schrafitto kunstwerken gepromoot. In de pandgang links, recht over de uitgang van de apotheek binnenin het station, kan je zien hoe een schrafitto kunstwerk laagje per laagje opgebouwd wordt. Maria Hendrikaplein (Flandria Palace Hotel) </h2>\n</div>\n \n <div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-text field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\"><p>Het Flandria Palace Hotel werd speciaal voor de WT1913 gebouwd en had 600 kamers. Het hotel was echter pas een maand na de opening van de WT1913 klaar, hierdoor miste het hotel heel wat boekingen en ging failliet. Tijdens WOI deed het gebouw dienst als hospitaal voor gewonde soldaten. Enkel het hoofdgebouw van het hotel werd opgetrokken in solide materiaal en heeft de tand des tijds overleefd. Prof. Magnel kreeg het gebouw toegewezen door Anseele om er zijn eerste experimenteel labo voor betontechnologie te vestigen. Nadien werd het, en ook vandaag nog, als kantoorruimte gebruikt door de NMBS.</p>\n\n<p><em>Neem rechts van het Flandria Palace Hotel de P. Clementinalaan.</em></p></div>\n \n </div>\n\n <div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text paragraph--view-mode--full\">\n \n <div class=\"field field--name-field-heading field--type-heading field--label-hidden field__item\"><h2>Prinses Clementinalaan</h2>\n</div>\n \n <div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-text field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\"><p>De <strong>Prinses Clementinalaan </strong>is in 1905 aangelegd. Ze is als het ware een uitstalraam voor de architecten uit de Belle Epoque. Daarom zijn er ook heel wat architectenwoningen te vinden. Bij Koninklijk Besluit was vastgelegd dat elke woning een voortuin moest bezitten, afgesloten door een smeedijzeren hekken. Ondanks deze bepaling vormt de straat een unieke kijk op de verschillende bouwstijlen uit het begin van de 20ste eeuw.</p>\n\n<p><em>Stap de straat in. Links (173) woonde <strong>Ferdinand Dierkens</strong>, bekend van de Socialistische \u2018Vooruit\u2019-gebouwen. Zijn woning ademt de grandeur van deze feestpaleizen en sluit aan bij de \u2018Beaux arts-architectuur. Bemerk het zittend puttofiguurtje (het engeltje) op het portaal. De bovenvensters met glas-in-lood en kleurrijke fries uit moza\u00EFek onder de kroonlijst verwijzen al naar de Art Nouveau. Zijn rechterbuurman (175) was <strong>Edgard Van Hoecke- Delmarle</strong>. Hij ontwierp dit monumentale art- nouveauhuis, compleet met geglazuurde tegels, een groot halfcirkelvormig bel- etagevenster, een sierlijk deurvenster. De beglaasde erker wordt ondersteund door smeedijzeren consoles in de vorm van vogels.</p>\n\n<p><em>Wandel verder de Prinses Clementinalaan af. Aan de overkant van de straat stop je aan nummer 86.</em></p></div>\n \n </div>\n\n <div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text paragraph--view-mode--full\">\n \n <div class=\"field field--name-field-heading field--type-heading field--label-hidden field__item\"><h2>P. Clementinalaan 86 (Villa Elisabeth)</h2>\n</div>\n \n <div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-text field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\"><p>Leon De Keyser ontwierp in 1909 dit burgerhuis in art nouveau. Zoals je boven de deur kunt lezen, werd het <strong>Villa Elisabeth </strong>genoemd. Het huis is opgetrokken in geglazuurde baksteen en heeft verschillende versieringen. De hoefijzervormige beneden vensters en het fraai boogvormig drielicht op de bovenverdieping zijn heel opvallend. Bekijk zeker ook het tegeltableau dat versierd is met de typische beroepssymbolen uit zijn tijd: schietlood, passer en tekendriehoek.</p>\n\n<p><em>Aan het einde van de straat loop je rechts onder het viaduct. Neem links voor je de Onafhankelijkheidslaan. In 1909 werd Oscar van de Voorde officieel als architect van de Wereldtentoonstelling aangesteld. Hij was verantwoordelijk voor het algemene plan van de aanleg. Vooral in het centrale deel van de terreinen - nu de wijk voor je, rond het Paul de Smet de Naeyerplein - viel een planmatige aanleg sterk op. Het STAM - het stadsmuseum van Gent - maakte een <strong>3D-reconstructie </strong>van deze plek. Het duurde tot 1926 voor de verkavelingsplannen van de voormalige Expo terreinen werden goedgekeurd. Hoewel de nood aan arbeidershuisvesting groot was, koos de Stad Gent resoluut voor een prestigeproject. De uitvaardiging van een hele reeks reglementeringen verzekerde het prestigieuze en esthetische karakter van de wijk.</p>\n\n<p>Je kunt gerust zeggen dat het Miljoenenkwartier een overzicht biedt van de Gentse interbellum-architectuur. De meeste architecten waren Gentenaars. Zowel de traditionalisten (zoals Maurice F\u00E9tu, Charles Hoge en Valentin Vaerwyck) als de modernisten (zoals Geo Bontinck, Jan-Albert De Bondt, Gaston Eysselinck en Geo Henderick) droegen bij aan het uitzicht van deze wijk. Deze architecten kwamen bovendien uit drie verschillende scholen. Elk van deze architectuuropleidingen drukten via hun oud-studenten hun stempel op deze wijk. Architecten die opgeleid waren door de Academie of de universiteit, realiseerden meer modernistische werken dan hun collega\u2019s van de traditionele Sint-Lucasschool die eerder romantisch-decoratief te werk gingen.</p>\n\n<p>De traditionalistische architectuur is vooral op de centrale assen van de wijk te vinden. Niet toevallig staan hier ook de rijkelijkst uitgewerkte woningen van voornamelijk industri\u00EBlen en groothandelaars. Hun conservatieve levenshouding duldde dan ook geen revolutionaire architectuur \u201Cmet een socialistisch geurtje\u201D. Elementen van de decoratieve Art Deco zijn vooral terug te vinden in de rijwoningen. Tenslotte zijn de modernistische stijlen goed vertegenwoordigd in het Miljoenenkwartier.</p>\n\n<p>Vooruitstrevende architecten zochten naar een architectuur die aangepast was aan de eisen van de 20ste eeuw. Tot de laatste groep behoort de expressionistische baksteenarchitectuur. Deze stijl gaat terug op de \u2018Amsterdamse School\u2019. Aan je rechterkant zie je hier een voorbeeld van: de <strong>\u2018Villa Berteloot\u2019 </strong>(Congreslaan 40) uit 1929. Geo Henderick gebruikt paraboolvormige dakvensters en erkers, baksteen in verschillende metselverbanden en benadrukt de ingang met siersmeedwerk. Voor het torentje op het dak gebruikt hij een organische vorm.</p>\n\n<p>Aan de overzijde - aan je linkerkant dus - staat een andere villa van dezelfde architect: de <strong>\u2018Villa Virginie Henderick-Carpentier\u2019 </strong>(Paul de Smet de Naeyerplein 1-3). De gelijkenis tussen beide villa\u2019s is treffend. Samen moesten ze als het ware Geo Hendericks \u201Cpoort tot het Miljoenenkwartier\u201D vormen. Door geldgebrek verkocht de eerste eigenaar - Geo Hendericks zuster - de villa nog tijdens de bouw. De nieuwe eigenaar paste het aan zijn smaak aan. Hierdoor is deze woning veel soberder van stijl en kan het eerder tot de \u2018Nieuwe Zakelijkheid\u2019 gerekend worden.</p>\n\n<p><em>Stap het park in. Net voor het monumentale \u2018Ros Beiaard\u2019 vind je </em><em>een borstbeeld.</em></p></div>\n \n </div>\n\n <div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text paragraph--view-mode--full\">\n \n <div class=\"field field--name-field-heading field--type-heading field--label-hidden field__item\"><h2>Bronzen borstbeeld \u201CPaul de Smet de Naeyer\u201D</h2>\n</div>\n \n <div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-text field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\"><p>De Wereldtentoonstelling werd georganiseerd door de <em>Soci\u00E9t\u00E9 </em><em>Anonyme de l\u2019Exposition Universelle </em><em>de Gand</em>. Erevoorzitter was de Gentse katoenbaron en voormalige katholieke eerste minister <strong>Paul de </strong><strong>Smet de Naeyer</strong>. Hij overleed trouwens tijdens de Expo. Om het evenwicht in het organiserend comit\u00E9 te garanderen trokken ook de liberale burgemeester Emile Braun, de socialistische senator Emile Coppieters en de ultrakatholieke vlasbaron Joseph Casier de kar.</p>\n\n<p>De Smet de Naeyer speelde als groot-industrieel in de katoennijverheid een belangrijke rol in de economische en politieke geschiedenis van Gent en Belgi\u00EB. Enerzijds was hij lid in talrijke raden van bestuur - waaronder die van de Algemene Spaar- en Lijfrentekas en van de Soci\u00E9t\u00E9 G\u00E9n\u00E9rale de Belgique. Anderzijds was hij actief in vrijwel elk politiek niveau \u00E9n speelde hij een belangrijke rol in het ontstaan van Belgisch Congo.</p>\n\n<p><em>Wanneer je je omdraait zie je het Ros Beyaert.</em></p></div>\n \n </div>\n\n <div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text paragraph--view-mode--full\">\n \n <div class=\"field field--name-field-heading field--type-heading field--label-hidden field__item\"><h2>Bronzen beeld \u201CRos Beyaert en de vier Heemskinderen\u201D</h2>\n</div>\n \n <div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-text field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\"><p>D\u00E9 blikvanger van de Eregalerij van de Expo was het circa acht meter hoge bronzen <strong>Ros Beyaert met de vier Heemskinderen</strong>. Het werd gemaakt door de Gentse beeldhouwers Alo\u00EFs De Beule en zijn vriend Domien Ingels. De Beule ontwierp een maquette van het beeld al in 1899 voor een tentoonstelling in Dendermonde en recupereerde zijn ontwerp voor de Gentse Expo. </p>\n\n<p>Het organiserend comit\u00E9 was onder de indruk van het \u201Cultra modern en stout opgevat ontwerp\u201D. De maquette werd goedgekeurd en zo kwam een beeldengroep die qua thematiek niets met Gent te maken heeft, op de Expo terecht. Op de rug van een steigerend paard - uitgevoerd door dierenbeeldhouwer Domien Ingels - zitten de vier gewapende heemskinderen terwijl twee gevallen strijders vertrappeld worden. De Beule stelde de heemskinderen voor als volwassen mannen met krachtige halfnaakte lichamen, strijdlustig in de aanvalshouding. Elke broer draagt zijn eigen wapen: een speer, bijl, slinger en boog.</p>\n\n<p><em>Stap verder het park in. Deze beeldengroep is het enige restant van deze art-decofontein, gemaakt door Jules Van Biesbroeck. Het stelt <strong>\u2018Schoonheid, Kracht en Wijsheid\u2019 </strong>voor. Centraal slaat de gespierde Hercules (Kracht) zijn rechterarm om een jonge halfnaakte vrouw (Schoonheid) met een bloem in de hand, en zijn linkerarm om een gesluierde vrouw (Wijsheid) met een driehoek op haar schoot. Het was van Biesbroecks vriendin die model stond voor de twee dames.</p>\n\n<p>Oorspronkelijk stonden er - net zoals bij het monument voor de gebroeders van Eyck aan de Sint- Baafskathedraal - links en rechts groepen mannen en vrouwen met kransen en vlaggen. Kracht, schoonheid, wijsheid zijn de symbolen van de vrijmetselarij. In 1913 werd er nog geheim over gedaan, al kwam veel geld voor de Wereldtentoonstelling van vrijmetselaars. Typische art-deco zijn ook de gegolfde lijnen en ruitmotieven. Let ook op de vensters: ze zijn voorzien van prachtige glasramen met een kleurrijke combinatie van geometrische en krullende motieven.</p>\n\n<p><em>Wandel richting de Krijgslaan. Sla daar naar rechts. Dit vrij monumentale bakstenen gebouw met twee bouwlagen uit 1929 zou de eerste woning met een plat dak in Gent zijn. De geometrische volumes zorgen voor een spel van horizontaliteit en verticaliteit. Een bas-reli\u00EBf van de Gentse beeldhouwer Geo Verbanck zorgt voor een sober accent. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd een deel van dit gebouw vernield. Tijdens de heropbouw voegde men achteraan een verdieping toe en verdeelde men de woning in twee.</p>\n\n<p><em>Stap de Vaderlandstraat in. </em><em>Aan het eerste kruispunt vind je links de woning \u201CGaston Eysselinck\u201D.</em></p></div>\n \n </div>\n\n <div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text paragraph--view-mode--full\">\n \n <div class=\"field field--name-field-heading field--type-heading field--label-hidden field__item\"><h2>Vaderlandstraat 120</h2>\n</div>\n \n <div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-text field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\"><p>Op de hoek van de Vaderlandstraat en de Fleurusstraat vind je misschien wel de merkwaardigste woning van de hele wijk. Het is de <strong>woning van architect Gaston Eysselinck </strong>en wordt beschouwd als \u00E9\u00E9n van de beste voorbeelden van de Internationale Stijlbeweging in Belgi\u00EB. </p>\n\n<p>Met deze woning gaf hij zijn persoonlijke interpretatie van de 5 principes van de Franse architect Le Corbusier. Om de woning visueel van de grond te tillen geeft hij de sokkel, met garage en kantoorruimte, een donkere kleur. Het horizontale raamtype is aanwezig, maar van een vrije geveloplossing is geen sprake: Eysselinck kiest voor wat hij een \u201Ccaisse trou\u00E9e\u201D, een \u201Cdoos met gaten\u201D noemt. Hoewel de plattegrond in principe gebaseerd is op het \u2018plan libre\u2019, wordt dit idee niet benadrukt door muren met rondingen: alleen de muur bij de binnentrap is afgerond. Tot slot is er het dakterras met het solarium.</p>\n\n<p>Dat Eysselinck in 1931 een schokeffect teweeg bracht in de wijk, is duidelijk. Het paste niet in de het verwachtingspatroon van de bewoners die hem al snel \u2018architect buitentrap\u2019 noemden en zijn woning de bijnamen \u2018de witte blok\u2019 en \u2018de bunker\u2019 kreeg.</p>\n\n<p><em>Stap de Fleurusstraat in tot aan de kerk \u201CSint</em><em>-Pieters-</em><em>Buiten\u201D.</em></p></div>\n \n </div>\n\n <div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text paragraph--view-mode--full\">\n \n <div class=\"field field--name-field-heading field--type-heading field--label-hidden field__item\"><h2>St.Pietersaalststraat 84 (parochiekerk Sint-Pieters-Buiten)</h2>\n</div>\n \n <div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-text field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\"><p>We eindigen waar we begonnen zijn: met de parochie \u2018Sint-Pieters-Buiten\u2019.</p>\n\n<p>De <strong>parochiekerk </strong><strong>Sint-Pieters-Buiten </strong>werd opgericht in 1856 naar ontwerp van J.B. Boterlaere. Door de aanleg van een luxueuze wijk, moest ook de parochiekerk vergroot en verfraaid worden. Als inwoner van de parochie stelde Valentin Vaerwyck voor deze taak belangeloos op zich te nemen. Hij integreerde het oorspronkelijke kerkje in de nieuwbouw. De centrale toren domineert de gevel \u00E9n het perspectief wanneer je vanuit de Fleurusstraat komt. Ze roept ook een associatie op met de Italiaanse campaniles. Boven het centrale portaal is een beeld van Sint-Pieter aangebracht.</p>\n\n<p><em>Wanneer je de Sint-Pietersaalststraat uitstapt vind je een tramhalte. Por problemas de seguridad y en vistas de la pr\u00F3xima Exposici\u00F3n Universal, result\u00F3 necesaria la construcci\u00F3n de una estaci\u00F3n m\u00E1s grande y la instalaci\u00F3n de nuevas v\u00EDas sobre una elevaci\u00F3n de terreno, debajo de la cual pasan t\u00FAneles para las v\u00EDas perpendiculares. Seg\u00FAn el dise\u00F1o original de Cloquet, el edificio de la estaci\u00F3n contaba con una planta m\u00E1s. La comisi\u00F3n de evaluaci\u00F3n consideraba que los viajeros deb\u00EDan poder ver el caracter\u00EDstico perfil de las tres torres de Gante nada m\u00E1s bajarse del tren. Las obras esgrafiadas del vest\u00EDbulo, que promocionan las ciudades belgas m\u00E1s importantes, demuestran que la estaci\u00F3n fue concebida como \u201Ctarjeta de visita\u201D para la Exposici\u00F3n Universal de 1913. En el pasillo izquierdo, justo en frente de la salida de la farmacia dentro de la estaci\u00F3n, se aprecia claramente las distintas capas de las obras esgrafiadas. Sin embargo, el hotel no abri\u00F3 sus puertas hasta un mes despu\u00E9s de la apertura de la Exposici\u00F3n, por lo que perdi\u00F3 numerosas reservas y termin\u00F3 en quiebra. Durante la Primera Guerra Mundial, el edificio sirvi\u00F3 de hospital para los soldados heridos. Solo el edificio principal del hotel fue construido de materiales s\u00F3lidos y ha resistido al paso del tiempo. Anseele autoriz\u00F3 al profesor Magnel a establecer en este edificio su primer laboratorio experimental de tecnolog\u00EDa del hormig\u00F3n. Un Real Decreto estipulaba que cada vivienda deb\u00EDa disponer de un jard\u00EDn frontal, cerrado por una verja de hierro forjado. De su vivienda emana la grandiosidad de este tipo de salas de fiestas, y su estilo se ajusta perfectamente a la arquitectura de <em>Beaux arts</em>. Llama la atenci\u00F3n la figura del angelito <em>putto</em> en el portal. Las ventanas de la planta superior, con vidriera y friso de muchos colores en mosaico debajo de la cornisa, ya insin\u00FAan la llegada del modernismo. A su derecha (n\u00B0 175) viv\u00EDa <strong>Edgard Van Hoecke- Delmarle</strong>. \u00C9l dise\u00F1\u00F3 esta monumental vivienda de estilo modernista con baldosas esmaltadas, grandes ventanas en forma de semic\u00EDrculo en la planta principal y una elegante puerta de vidrio. El mirador acristalado se sostiene por m\u00E9nsulas de hierro forjado con forma de p\u00E1jaros.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span><em>Siga caminando por la calle Prinses Clementinalaan. Los planos de parcelaci\u00F3n de los antiguos terrenos de la Expo no fueron aprobados hasta el a\u00F1o 1926. A pesar de la flagrante necesidad de viviendas para obreros, la ciudad de Gante se decidi\u00F3 por un proyecto prestigioso. Mediante la promulgaci\u00F3n de toda una serie de reglas y normas, la ciudad asegur\u00F3 la consolidaci\u00F3n del car\u00E1cter prestigioso y est\u00E9tico del barrio.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>Se podr\u00EDa afirmar que el barrio de los millonarios ofrece una vista de conjunto de la arquitectura gantesa del periodo de entreguerras. La mayor\u00EDa de los arquitectos eran de origen gant\u00E9s. Tantos los arquitectos de enfoques m\u00E1s tradicionales (como Maurice F\u00E9tu, Charles Hoge y Valentin Vaerwyck) como los defensores del estilo modernista (como Geo Bontinck, Jan-Albert De Bondt, Gaston Eysselinck y Geo Henderick) fueron d\u00E1ndole forma a este nuevo barrio. Adem\u00E1s, estos arquitectos proven\u00EDan de tres escuelas de arquitectura diferentes, cada una de las cuales ha dejado su huella en este barrio a trav\u00E9s de sus antiguos alumnos. Los arquitectos formados en la Academia o en la universidad ten\u00EDan una influencia m\u00E1s modernista que sus compa\u00F1eros de la escuela tradicional Sint-Lucasschool, que adoptaban un enfoque m\u00E1s bien rom\u00E1ntico y decorativo.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>La arquitectura tradicional se concentra m\u00E1s bien en los ejes centrales del barrio, donde se encuentran tambi\u00E9n las casas m\u00E1s exuberantes. Los elementos decorativos estilo Art D\u00E9co se observan con m\u00E1s frecuencia en las viviendas adosadas. Y finalmente, el estilo modernista est\u00E1 bien representado en el barrio de los millonarios.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>Los arquitectos progresistas buscaban una arquitectura adaptada a las exigencias del siglo XX. El expresionismo en ladrillo, inspirado en la Escuela de \u00C1msterdam, responde a dichas exigencias. A mano derecha puede ver un bonito ejemplo: <strong>\u2018Villa Berteloot\u2019 </strong>(calle Congreslaan n\u00B0 40), que data de 1929. Geo Henderick utiliz\u00F3 buhardillas y miradores con forma de par\u00E1bola, diferentes configuraciones de ladrillo, y adorn\u00F3 la entrada con detalles de hierro forjado. Para la peque\u00F1a torre sobre el tejado ha recurrido a una forma org\u00E1nica.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>Justo en frente, es decir, a mano izquierda, hay otra vivienda construida por el mismo arquitecto: la \u201C<strong>Villa Virginie Henderick-Carpentier\u201D </strong>(calle Paul de Smet de Naeyerplein n\u00B0 1-3). La semejanza entre ambas viviendas es muy aparente. Geo Hendricks concibi\u00F3 ambas viviendas como \u201Cpuerta de entrada al barrio de los millonarios\u201D. Sin embargo, la primera propietaria de la casa (la hermana de Geo Hendericks) la vendi\u00F3 por falta de dinero cuando todav\u00EDa se encontraba en fase de construcci\u00F3n, y el nuevo propietario la adapt\u00F3 a sus propios gustos. Por ello, esta vivienda es mucho m\u00E1s sobria que la anterior y corresponde m\u00E1s bien al estilo \u201CNueva Objetividad\u201D.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span><em>Entre al parque. Para garantizar el equilibrio el alcalde liberal Emile Braun, el senador socialista Emile Coppieters y el magnate de lino ultracat\u00F3lico Joseph Casier tambi\u00E9n formaban parte del comit\u00E9.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>En su calidad de industrial importante del sector del algod\u00F3n, De Smet de Naeyer desempe\u00F1\u00F3 un papel importante en la historia econ\u00F3mica y pol\u00EDtica de Gante y de B\u00E9lgica en general. De Beule ya hab\u00EDa dise\u00F1ado una maqueta de la estatua en 1899 para una exposici\u00F3n en Dendermonde, y recuper\u00F3 este dise\u00F1o para la Exposici\u00F3n Universal de Gante. </span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>El comit\u00E9 organizador qued\u00F3 muy impresionado con este \u201Cdise\u00F1o ultramoderno y atrevido\u201D. La maqueta fue aprobada, y as\u00ED fue c\u00F3mo un grupo de estatuas cuya tem\u00E1tica no ten\u00EDa nada que ver con la ciudad de Gante, acab\u00F3 expuesta en la Expo. En el lomo del caballo encabritado, realizado por el escultor especialista en animales Domien Ingels, se encuentran los cuatro hijos de Aym\u00F3n armados, mientras dos guerreros ca\u00EDdos son pisoteados. De Beule represent\u00F3 a los cuatro hijos de Aym\u00F3n como hombres adultos fuertes y combativos, con torso desnudo y en posici\u00F3n de ataque. Cada hermano lleva su propia arma: una lanza, un hacha, una honda y un arco.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span><em>Ad\u00E9ntrese m\u00E1s en el parque. Representa a <strong>\u2018la Belleza, la Fuerza y la Sabidur\u00EDa\u2019</strong>. En el centro, un musculoso H\u00E9rcules (Fuerza) rodea con su brazo derecho a una mujer joven y semidesnuda (Belleza) con una flor en la mano, mientras rodea con su brazo izquierdo a una mujer cubierta por un velo (Sabidur\u00EDa) con un tri\u00E1ngulo en el regazo. La novia de Van Biesbroeck hizo de modelo para estas dos j\u00F3venes.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>Originalmente, la estatua estaba flanqueada por un grupo de hombres y mujeres que sosten\u00EDan coronas y banderas, como era tambi\u00E9n el caso del monumento a los hermanos Van Eyck delante de la Catedral de San Bav\u00F3n. La fuerza, la belleza y la sabidur\u00EDa son los s\u00EDmbolos de la francmasoner\u00EDa. En 1913 todav\u00EDa no se hablaba mucho de esta instituci\u00F3n, aunque gran parte de los fondos destinados a la Exposici\u00F3n Universal proced\u00EDan de este colectivo. Fue dise\u00F1ada por Oscar Vandenhoeck. Las ventanas y las puertas tienen formas muy diversas: hay rectangulares, con esquinas redondeadas o que se estrechan hacia la base. Las l\u00EDneas onduladas y las figuras romboides tambi\u00E9n son muy t\u00EDpicas del Art D\u00E9co. F\u00EDjese tambi\u00E9n en las ventanas: est\u00E1n provistas de preciosas vidrieras y combinaciones llenas de color de dibujos geom\u00E9tricos y ondulados.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span><em>Siga paseando en direcci\u00F3n a la calle Krijgslaan. Este monumental edificio de ladrillos de dos plantas, construido en 1929, fue la primera vivienda en Gante con techo plano. Los vol\u00FAmenes geom\u00E9tricos crean un juego de planos horizontales y verticales. El bajorrelieve del escultor gant\u00E9s Geo Verbanck aporta un adorno sobrio. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, parte del edificio fue destruido. Durante su reconstrucci\u00F3n, se a\u00F1adi\u00F3 una planta en la parte posterior y la vivienda fue dividida en dos.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span><em>Tome la calle Vaderlandstraat. En el primer cruce podr\u00E1 ver la casa \u201CGaston Eysselinck\u201D a mano izquierda.</em></span></span></span></p></div>\n \n </div>\n\n <div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text paragraph--view-mode--full\">\n \n <div class=\"field field--name-field-heading field--type-heading field--label-hidden field__item\"><h2>Calle Vaderlandstraat n\u00B0 120</h2>\n</div>\n \n <div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-text field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\"><p><span><span><span>En la esquina de las calles Vaderlandstraat y Fleurusstraat podr\u00E1 ver la casa m\u00E1s peculiar de todo el barrio. Es la <strong>vivienda del arquitecto Gaston Eysselinck</strong>, y es considerada uno de los mejores ejemplos del movimiento <em>De Stijl (</em>El<em> </em>Estilo) internacional en B\u00E9lgica. </span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>A trav\u00E9s de esta vivienda, el arquitecto refleja su interpretaci\u00F3n personal de los 5 principios del arquitecto franc\u00E9s Le Corbusier. Para crear una sensaci\u00F3n de \u201Cvivienda flotante\u201D, le confiri\u00F3 un color oscuro al z\u00F3calo, que comprende un garaje y una oficina. Aunque la vivienda cuente con ventanas horizontales, no se respeta el concepto de \u201Cfachada libre\u201D: Eysselinck opta por lo que \u00E9l mismo llama <em>caisse trou\u00E9e</em>, o sea, \u201Cuna caja con agujeros\u201D. Si bien es cierto que los planos de la casa se basan en principio en el concepto de \u201Cplano libre\u201D, esta idea no se ve reforzada por paredes curvas: la \u00FAnica pared curva es la de las escaleras interiores. La casa tambi\u00E9n cuenta con una azotea con sol\u00E1rium.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>Es evidente que el dise\u00F1o de Eysselinck caus\u00F3 todo un revuelo en el barrio, all\u00E1 por el a\u00F1o 1931. La vivienda no encajaba con las ideas preconcebidas de los habitantes, y r\u00E1pidamente fue apodada \u201Cel bloque blanco\u201D o \u201Cel b\u00FAnquer\u201D.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span><em>Gire hacia la calle Fleurusstraat y s\u00EDgala hasta la iglesia de \u201CSint-Pieters-Buiten\u201D.</em></span></span></span></p></div>\n \n </div>\n\n <div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text paragraph--view-mode--full\">\n \n <div class=\"field field--name-field-heading field--type-heading field--label-hidden field__item\"><h2>Calle St. Pietersaalststraat 84 (iglesia de la parroquia \u201CSint-Pieters-Buiten\u201D)</h2>\n</div>\n \n <div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-text field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\"><p><span><span><span>Terminamos por donde hemos empezado: en la parroquia de \u201CSint-Pieters-Buiten\u201D.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>La iglesia parroquial de <strong>Sint-Pieters-Buiten</strong> fue construida en 1856 seg\u00FAn el dise\u00F1o de J.B. Boterlaere. La construcci\u00F3n de este nuevo barrio lujoso hizo surgir la necesidad de expandir y embellecer la iglesia parroquial. Como miembro de la parroquia, Valentin Vaerwyck se ofreci\u00F3 como voluntario para llevar a cabo esta misi\u00F3n. Integr\u00F3 la iglesia original en el nuevo edificio. La torre central, que recuerda a los <em>campaniles</em> italianos, domina la fachada y es lo primero que capta la atenci\u00F3n al salir de la calle Fleurusstraat. Sicherheitsprobleme und die bevorstehende Weltausstellung erforderten jedoch den Bau eines gr\u00F6\u00DFeren Bahnhofs und die Installation von Gleisen auf einer hohen B\u00F6schung mit Durchg\u00E4ngen f\u00FCr die kreuzenden Stra\u00DFen. Im urspr\u00FCnglichen Entwurf von Cloquet hatte das Bahnhofgeb\u00E4ude eine zus\u00E4tzliche Etage. Aber der bewertende Ausschuss war der Meinung, dass man bei Ankunft in Gent von den Bahnsteigen aus sofort die typische Genter Skyline mit den 3 T\u00FCrmen sehen sollte. In der Eingangshalle ist noch deutlich zu erkennen, dass der Bahnhof ein Aush\u00E4ngeschild f\u00FCr die Weltausstellung 1913 war. Die wichtigsten belgischen St\u00E4dte werden in Sgraffito-Kunstwerken ins Rampenlicht gestellt. Im linken Flur, gerade gegen\u00FCber dem Ausgang der Apotheke im Bahnhof, k\u00F6nnen Sie sehen, wie ein Sgraffito-Kunstwerk Schicht f\u00FCr Schicht aufgebaut wird. Es war jedoch erst ein Monat nach der Er\u00F6ffnung der Weltausstellung 1913 fertig, sodass das Hotel zahlreiche Buchungen verpasste und in Konkurs geriet. W\u00E4hrend des Ersten Weltkriegs wurde das Geb\u00E4ude als Krankenhaus f\u00FCr verletzte Soldaten eingerichtet. Nur das Hauptgeb\u00E4ude des Hotels wurde in solidem Material errichtet und hat den Zahn der Zeit \u00FCberstanden. Anseele hat Prof. Magnel das Geb\u00E4ude zugewiesen, um dort sein erstes experimentelles Labor f\u00FCr Betontechnologie zu gr\u00FCnden. Ein K\u00F6niglicher Beschluss schrieb vor, dass jede Wohnung einen Vorgarten haben sollte, welcher mit einem schmiedeeisernen Gitter umz\u00E4unt werden sollte. Trotz dieser Vorschrift bietet die Stra\u00DFe einen einzigartigen Blick auf die unterschiedlichen Baustile am Anfang des 20. Seine Wohnung atmet die Grandeur dieser Festpalaste und passt perfekt zu der Beaux-Arts-Architektur. Wenn Sie genau hinschauen, sehen Sie auch eine sitzende Putte (der kleine Engel) auf dem Portal. Die oberen Bleiglasfenster und der bunte Mosaikfries unter dem Gesims verweisen schon auf den Jugendstil. Sein rechter Nachbar (175) war <strong>Edgard Van Hoecke-Delmarle</strong>. Er entwarf dieses monumentale Haus im Jugendstil mit glasierten Fliesen, einem gro\u00DFen halbkreisf\u00F6rmigen Beletage-Fenster und einem zierlichen T\u00FCrfenster. Erst 1926 wurden die Parzellierungspl\u00E4ne f\u00FCr das ehemalige Weltausstellungsgel\u00E4nde gebilligt. Obwohl dringend Arbeiterwohnungen ben\u00F6tigt wurden, entschied sich die Stadt Gent trotzdem f\u00FCr ein prestigetr\u00E4chtiges Projekt. Der Erlass einer ganzen Reihe von Vorschriften gew\u00E4hrleistete den vornehmen und \u00E4sthetischen Charakter des Viertels.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>Man kann also sagen, dass das Millionenviertel eine \u00DCbersicht \u00FCber die Genter Architektur in der Zwischenkriegszeit bietet. Die meisten Architekten waren Einwohner von Gent. Sowohl die Traditionalisten (wie Maurice F\u00E9tu, Charles Hoge und Valentin Vaerwyck) als auch die Modernisten (wie Geo Bontinck, Jan-Albert De Bondt, Gaston Eysselinck und Geo Henderick) gestalteten das Aussehen des Viertels mit. Diese Architekten hatten \u00FCbrigens bei drei unterschiedlichen Lehranstalten ihr Studium genossen. Diese unterschiedlichen Architekturausbildungen pr\u00E4gten \u00FCber ihre ehemaligen Studenten dieses Viertel. Architekten, die an der Akademie oder der Universit\u00E4t studiert hatten, schufen modernistischere Werke als ihre Kollegen, die an der traditionellen St.-Lucas-Schule studiert hatten. Letztere verwendeten eher einen romantisch-dekorativen Stil.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>Die traditionalistische Architektur findet man vor allem an den zentralen Achsen des Viertels. Es ist kein Zufall, dass sich hier die am reichlichsten ausgef\u00FChrten Wohnungen von haupts\u00E4chlich Industriellen und Gro\u00DFh\u00E4ndlern befinden. Ihre konservative Einstellung duldete \u00FCbrigens keine revolution\u00E4re Architektur \u201Emit einem sozialistischen Ansatz\u201C. Dekorative Art d\u00E9co-Elemente finden sich vor allem in den Reihenh\u00E4usern wieder. Aber auch die modernistischen Stile sind im Millionenviertel reichlich vertreten.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>Innovative Architekten machten sich auf die Suche nach einer Architektur, die den Anforderungen des 20. Jahrhunderts angepasst war. Zur letzten Gruppe geh\u00F6rt die expressionistische Backsteinarchitektur. Dieser Stil geht auf die Amsterdamer Schule zur\u00FCck. Auf der rechten Seite sehen Sie ein Beispiel dieses Stils: <strong>Villa Berteloot</strong> (Congreslaan 40) aus dem Jahre 1929. Geo Henderick verwendet parabolische Dachgauben und Erker und Ziegelstein in unterschiedlichen Mauerwerksverb\u00E4nden und hebt den Eingang mittels zierlicher Schmiedearbeit hervor. F\u00FCr den kleinen Turm auf dem Dach w\u00E4hlte er eine organische Form.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>Auf der anderen Seite der Stra\u00DFe \u2013 also links \u2013 befindet sich eine weitere Villa, die vom gleichen Architekten entworfen wurde: <strong>\u2018Villa Virginie Henderick-Carpentier\u2019 </strong>(Paul de Smet de Naeyerplein 1-3). Die beiden Villen sehen sich sehr \u00E4hnlich. Zusammen sollten sie das vom Geo Henderick entworfene \u201ETor zum Millionenviertel\u201C bilden. Wegen Geldmangel verkaufte die erste Eigent\u00FCmerin \u2013 die Schwester von Geo Henderick \u2013 die Villa noch w\u00E4hrend des Baus. De Beule entwarf 1899 schon ein Modell der Statue im Rahmen einer Ausstellung in Dendermonde und verwendete seinen Entwurf ein weiteres Mal f\u00FCr die Genter Weltausstellung. </span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>Das Organisationskomitee war von dem \u201Eultramodernen und gewagten Entwurf\" stark beeindruckt. Das Modell wurde gebilligt, was dazu f\u00FChrte, dass eine Figurengruppe, die in thematischer Hinsicht \u00FCberhaupt nichts mit Gent zu tun hat, w\u00E4hrend der Weltausstellung zu bewundern war. Auf dem R\u00FCcken eines sich b\u00E4umenden Pferdes \u2013 geschaffen vom Tierbildhauer Domien Ingels \u2013 sitzen die vier bewaffneten Haimonskinder, w\u00E4hrend zwei gefallene K\u00E4mpfer niedergetreten werden. De Beule stellte die Haimonskinder als erwachsene M\u00E4nner mit kr\u00E4ftigen, halbnackten K\u00F6rpern dar, die eine kampflustige Angriffsposition einnehmen. In der Mitte sehen wir den muskul\u00F6sen Herkules (Kraft), der mit seinem rechten Arm eine junge, halbnackte Frau (Sch\u00F6nheit) mit einer Blume in der Hand und mit seinem linken Arm eine verschleierte Frau (Weisheit) mit einem Dreieck auf ihrem Scho\u00DF umarmt. Die zwei Frauen wurden nach der Freundin von Van Biesbroeck modelliert.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>Urspr\u00FCnglich befanden sich links und rechts neben der Statue Gruppen von M\u00E4nnern und Frauen mit Kr\u00E4nzen und Fahnen \u2013 genau wie beim Monument f\u00FCr die Br\u00FCder van Eyck an der St.-Bavo-Kathedrale. Kraft, Sch\u00F6nheit und Weisheit sind die Symbole der Freimaurerei. 1913 galt diese noch als geheim, obwohl viele Finanzmittel f\u00FCr die Weltausstellung von Freimaurern zur Verf\u00FCgung gestellt wurden. Sie ist die <strong>Wohnung des Architekten Gaston Eysselinck </strong>und wird als eines der besten Beispiele des Internationalen Stils in Belgien betrachtet. </span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>Mit dieser Wohnung gab er den 5 Prinzipien des franz\u00F6sischen Architekten Le Corbusier eine pers\u00F6nliche Deutung. Um die Wohnung visuell vom Boden zu erheben, hat er den Sockel mit Garage und B\u00FCroraum dunkel angestrichen. Der horizontale Fenstertyp ist zwar anwesend, aber von einer freien Fassadenl\u00F6sung ist \u00FCberhaupt nicht die Rede: Eysselinck entscheidet sich in seinen eigenen Worten f\u00FCr eine \"caisse trou\u00E9e\" bzw. eine Kiste mit L\u00F6chern. Obwohl der Grundriss im Prinzip auf dem \u201Efreien Grundriss\u201C basiert, wird diese Idee nicht mittels Mauern mit Rundungen betont: Nur die Mauer an der Innentreppe wurde abgerundet. Schlie\u00DFlich gibt es auch eine Dachterrasse mit einem S\u00F6ller.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>Es mag also deutlich sein, dass Eysselinck 1931 das Viertel wirklich schockierte. Boterlaere gem\u00E4\u00DF erbaut. Der Bau eines Luxusviertels bedeutete, dass auch die Pfarrkirche vergr\u00F6\u00DFert und versch\u00F6nert werden sollte. Als Einwohner der Pfarrgemeinde schlug Valentin Vaerwyck vor, diese Aufgabe uneigenn\u00FCtzig auf sich zu nehmen. Er integrierte sogar die urspr\u00FCngliche Kirche in den Neubau. Der zentrale Turm dominiert die Fassade und die Perspektive, wenn man sie \u00FCber die Fleurusstraat erreicht. Des probl\u00E8mes de s\u00E9curit\u00E9 et l\u2019approche de l\u2019exposition universelle ont incit\u00E9 \u00E0 construire une gare plus grande et \u00E0 am\u00E9nager des voies sur un talus sur\u00E9lev\u00E9, avec des tunnels en-dessous pour les rues perpendiculaires. Dans le projet initial de Cloquet, le b\u00E2timent de la gare comptait un niveau de plus. La commission d\u2019\u00E9valuation a estim\u00E9 que l\u2019horizon gantois typique, avec ses 3 tours, devait \u00EAtre visible depuis le quai pour les voyageurs qui arrivaient \u00E0 Gand. Dans le hall d\u2019entr\u00E9e, des \u0153uvres sgraffite faisant la promotion des principales villes belges rappellent que la gare devait servir de carte de visite pour l\u2019exposition universelle de 1913. Il a fallu attendre 1926 pour que les plans de lotissement des anciens terrains de l\u2019Expo soient approuv\u00E9s. Malgr\u00E9 les besoins importants de logements pour ouvriers, la Ville de Gand a r\u00E9solument opt\u00E9 pour un projet de prestige. La proclamation de toute une s\u00E9rie de r\u00E9glementations a assur\u00E9 le caract\u00E8re prestigieux et esth\u00E9tique du quartier.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>On peut dire que le quartier des Millionnaires offre un aper\u00E7u de l\u2019architecture gantoise de l\u2019Entre-deux-guerres. La plupart des architectes \u00E9taient gantois. Tant les traditionalistes (Maurice F\u00E9tu, Charles Hoge, Valentin Vaerwyck\u2026) que les modernistes (Geo Bontinck, Jan-Albert De Bondt, Gaston Eysselinck, Geo Henderick\u2026) ont contribu\u00E9 \u00E0 l\u2019aspect de ce quartier. Ces architectes \u00E9taient issus de trois \u00E9coles diff\u00E9rentes. Chacune de ces \u00E9coles d\u2019architecture a appos\u00E9 sa marque sur ce quartier, par le biais de ses anciens \u00E9tudiants. Les architectes form\u00E9s par l\u2019acad\u00E9mie ou l\u2019universit\u00E9 ont r\u00E9alis\u00E9 des b\u00E2timents plus modernistes que ceux de l\u2019\u00E9cole de Saint-Luc, lesquels ont adopt\u00E9 une approche plus romantique et d\u00E9corative.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>L\u2019architecture traditionaliste est surtout pr\u00E9sente sur les axes centraux du quartier, o\u00F9 l\u2019on trouve \u00E9galement les maisons les plus opulentes. Ce n\u2019est pas un hasard : elles appartenaient principalement \u00E0 des industriels et \u00E0 des grossistes, dont les id\u00E9es conservatrices ne pouvaient tol\u00E9rer l\u2019architecture r\u00E9volutionnaire \u00AB teint\u00E9e de socialisme \u00BB. On retrouve principalement les \u00E9l\u00E9ments d\u2019Art d\u00E9co dans les maisons de rang\u00E9e. Enfin, les styles modernistes sont \u00E9galement bien repr\u00E9sent\u00E9s dans le quartier des Millionnaires.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>Les architectes avant-gardistes cherchaient une architecture adapt\u00E9e aux exigences du <span lang=\"FR\"><span>XX</span></span>e si\u00E8cle. L\u2019expressionnisme de brique rel\u00E8ve de ce groupe. Ce style est li\u00E9 \u00E0 l\u2019\u00C9cole d\u2019Amsterdam. Vous pouvez en voir un exemple sur votre droite : la <strong>\u00AB Villa Berteloot \u00BB </strong>(Congreslaan 40), de 1929. Geo Henderick utilise des lucarnes et oriels en forme de parabole, diff\u00E9rents appareillages de briques, et accentue l\u2019entr\u00E9e \u00E0 l\u2019aide d\u2019une ferronnerie ornementale. Pour la petite tour sur le toit, il a recours \u00E0 une forme organique.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>De l\u2019autre c\u00F4t\u00E9 \u2013 \u00E0 votre gauche donc \u2013 se trouve une autre villa du m\u00EAme architecte : la <strong>\u00AB Villa Virginie Henderick-Carpentier \u00BB</strong> (Paul de Smet de Naeyerplein 1-3). La ressemblance entre ces deux villas est frappante. Ensemble, elles devaient constituer le \u00AB portail d\u2019acc\u00E8s au quartier des Millionnaires \u00BB de Geo Henderick. Par manque d\u2019argent, la premi\u00E8re propri\u00E9taire \u2013 la s\u0153ur de Geo Henderick \u2013 vendit la villa avant m\u00EAme que sa construction ne fut achev\u00E9e. Le nouveau propri\u00E9taire l\u2019adapta \u00E0 son go\u00FBt, ce qui explique le style beaucoup plus sobre de cette maison, que l\u2019on pourrait plut\u00F4t rattacher \u00E0 la \u00AB Nouvelle Objectivit\u00E9 \u00BB.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span><em>Entrez dans le parc. Celui-ci mourut durant l\u2019Expo. Afin de garantir l\u2019\u00E9quilibre en son sein, le comit\u00E9 d\u2019organisation comptait \u00E9galement le bourgmestre lib\u00E9ral Emile Braun, le s\u00E9nateur socialiste Emile Coppieters et le magnat du lin ultra-catholique Joseph Casier.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>En tant que grand industriel du secteur du coton, De Smet de Naeyer joua un r\u00F4le important dans l\u2019histoire \u00E9conomique et politique de Gand et de la Belgique. D\u2019une part, il \u00E9tait membre de nombreux conseils d\u2019administration \u2013 dont ceux de la Caisse g\u00E9n\u00E9rale d\u2019\u00E9pargne et de retraite et de la Soci\u00E9t\u00E9 G\u00E9n\u00E9rale de Belgique. Elle a \u00E9t\u00E9 r\u00E9alis\u00E9e par les sculpteurs gantois et amis Alo\u00EFs De Beule et Domien Ingels. De Beule avait d\u00E9j\u00E0 con\u00E7u une maquette de la statue en 1899 pour une exposition \u00E0 Termonde, et r\u00E9cup\u00E9ra son projet pour l\u2019Exposition universelle de Gand. </span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>Le comit\u00E9 d\u2019organisation fut impressionn\u00E9 par ce projet \u00AB ultra moderne et audacieux \u00BB. La maquette fut approuv\u00E9e et c\u2019est ainsi qu\u2019un groupe de statues dont la th\u00E9matique \u00E9tait sans rapport avec Gand se retrouva \u00E0 l\u2019Expo. Un cheval qui se cabre \u2013 r\u00E9alis\u00E9 par le sculpteur animalier Domien Ingels \u2013 est chevauch\u00E9 par les quatre fils Aymon arm\u00E9s, tandis que deux guerriers \u00E0 terre sont pi\u00E9tin\u00E9s. De Beule a repr\u00E9sent\u00E9 les fils Aymon en hommes adultes, aux corps semi-d\u00E9nud\u00E9s et puissants, dans une posture combattive. Ce groupe de statues r\u00E9alis\u00E9 par Jules Van Biesbroeck est le seul vestige de cette fontaine Art d\u00E9co. Il repr\u00E9sente <strong>la Beaut\u00E9, la Force et la Sagesse</strong>. Au centre, le robuste Hercule (Force) a son bras droit autour d\u2019une jeune femme semi-nue (Beaut\u00E9) ayant une fleur \u00E0 la main, et son bras gauche autour d\u2019une femme portant un voile sur la t\u00EAte (Sagesse) et un triangle sur le giron. The assessment commission felt that, when arriving in Ghent, people should be able to see the typical Ghent skyline with its three towers from the platform. It is obvious from the entrance hall that the railway station was meant as a showcase for the 1913 World's Fair, since the principal Belgian cities are promoted in sgrafitto artworks. In the hallway on the left, right across from the exit of the pharmacy in the railway station, you can see how a sgrafitto artwork is made step by step. However, the hotel missed a significant number of bookings because it was only finished a month after the Expo's opening, which caused it to go bankrupt. The building was used as a hospital to treat wounded soldiers during WWI. Only the main building of the hotel was built in solid materials and has survived the test of time. Anseele allocated the building to Prof. Magnel to establish his first experimental laboratory for concrete technology. The upper stained-glass windows and the colourful mosaic frieze under the cornice are already a reference to Art Nouveau. <strong>Edgard Van Hoecke-Delmarle</strong> was his neighbour (175). He designed this monumental Art Nouveau house, complete with glazed tiles, a large semicircular first-floor window and an ornate door window. The development plans of the former World\u2019s Fair grounds weren\u2019t approved until 1926. Although the need for workers' housing was great, the City of Ghent resolutely opted for a prestige project. The issue of a whole series of regulations ensured the prestigious and aesthetic character of the district.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>You could say that the Millionaires\u2019 Quarter offers an overview of Ghent's interwar-period architecture. Most of the architects who worked here were from Ghent. Both the traditionalists (such as Maurice F\u00E9tu, Charles Hoge and Valentin Vaerwyck) and the modernists (such as Geo Bontinck, Jan-Albert De Bondt, Gaston Eysselinck and Geo Henderick) contributed to the district\u2019s appearance. Moreover, all these architects came from three different schools. Each of these architectural schools made their mark on the neighbourhood through their former students. Architects trained by the Academy or University designed more modernist houses than their colleagues from the traditional Sint-Lucas school, whose approach was more romantic-decorative.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p> </p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>You can find the traditionalistic architecture mainly on the district\u2019s central axes. It is no coincidence that you can also find the most elaborate houses that mainly belonged to industrialists and wholesalers here. Their conservative attitude did not allow for revolutionary architecture \u201Cthat smelled like socialism\u201D. Decorative Art Deco elements can be found mainly in the terraced houses. Modernist styles are also well represented in the Millionaires\u2019 Quarter.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>Progressive architects were looking for an architecture that met the demands of the 20th century. The last group is that of the expressionist brick architecture. This style goes back to the \u2018Amsterdam School\u2019. You can see an example of this style on your right: \u2018<strong>Villa Berteloot</strong>\u2019 (Congreslaan 40) which dates from 1929. Geo Henderick used parabolic dormer windows and bay windows as well as various brickwork bonds, and he emphasised the entrance with wrought iron. He used an organic shape for the little tower on the roof.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>Across the street \u2013 on the left side \u2013 you can see another villa designed by the same architect: '<strong>Villa Virginie Henderick-Carpentier</strong>\u2019 (Paul de Smet de Naeyerplein 1-3). The similarity between the two villas is striking. They were supposed to form Geo Henderick\u2019s \"gateway to the Millionaires\u2019 Quarter\u201D. Geo Henderick\u2019s sister, who was the first owner, sold the house during its construction because of a lack of funds. The new owner adapted the house to their taste. As a result, this house is much more sober in terms of style and it rather belongs to the New Objectivity movement.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span><em>Walk into the park.</em><em> </em><em>Right in front the monumental sculpture of the horse Bayard, you\u2019ll find a bust.</em></span></span></span></p></div>\n \n </div>\n\n <div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text paragraph--view-mode--full\">\n \n <div class=\"field field--name-field-heading field--type-heading field--label-hidden field__item\"><h2>Bronze bust \u201CPaul de Smet de Naeyer\u201D</h2>\n</div>\n \n <div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-text field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\"><p><span><span><span>The 1913 World\u2019s Fair was organised by <em>Soci\u00E9t\u00E9 Anonyme de l\u2019Exposition Universelle de Gand</em>. Honorary chairman was Ghent cotton baron and former Catholic prime minister <strong>Paul de Smet de Naeyer</strong>, who died during the World\u2019s Fair. In order to achieve a balance in the organising committee, liberal mayor Emile Braun, socialist senator Emile Coppieters and ultra-catholic flax baron Joseph Casier were also involved. </span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>De Smet de Naeyer played an important role in Ghent's and Belgium\u2019s economic and political history, as he was a major industrialist in the cotton industry. On the one hand, he was a member of countless boards of directors \u2013 including those of the several banks. On the other hand, he was active on almost every political level and played an important role in the creation of the Belgian Congo.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span><em>When you turn around, you can see the horse Bayard.</em></span></span></span></p></div>\n \n </div>\n\n <div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text paragraph--view-mode--full\">\n \n <div class=\"field field--name-field-heading field--type-heading field--label-hidden field__item\"><h2>Bronze sculpture of the horse Bayard and the four sons of Aymon</h2>\n</div>\n \n <div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-text field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\"><p><span><span><span>The eye-catcher of the <em>court of honour</em> of the World\u2019s Fair was the eight metre high bronze <strong>sculpture of the horse Bayard and the four sons of Aymon</strong><strong>.</strong> It was made by Ghent sculptors Alo\u00EFs De Beule and his friend Domien Ingels. De Beule had already designed a mock-up of the sculpture in 1899 for an exhibition in Dendermonde and reused the design for the Ghent Expo. </span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>The organising committee was impressed by the \u201Cultra-modern and boldly conceived design\u201D. The mock-up was approved and that\u2019s how a sculptural group that had thematically nothing to do with Ghent ended up at the Expo. The four armed sons of Aymon are sitting on the rearing horse\u2019s back \u2013 made by animal sculptor Domien Ingels \u2013 while two fallen warriors are being trampled. De Beule portrayed the sons of Aymon as adult men with powerful half-naked bodies, combative in attack posture. This sculptural group is the only remnant of that Art Deco fountain, which was made by Jules Van Biesbroeck. It represents <strong>\u2018Beauty, Strength and Wisdom\u2019</strong>. In the centre, the muscular Hercules (Strength) wraps his right arm around a young half-naked woman (Beauty) holding a flower, and his left arm around a veiled woman (Wisdom) with a triangle in her lap. Van Biesbroecks\u2019s girlfriend modelled for the two ladies.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>Originally \u2013 just as in the case of the monument to the Van Eyck brothers next to St Bavo's Cathedral \u2013 there were groups of men and women with wreaths and flags on the left and right. Strength, beauty and wisdom are Masonic symbols. In 1913, Freemasonry was still a secretive affair, although freemasons donated large amounts of money to the World\u2019s Fair. It was designed by Oscar Vandenhoeck. The windows and doors come in different shapes: some are rectangular, while others are polygonal or tapering. The waving lines and diamond motifs are also typical Art Deco elements. This rather monumental double-story brick building from 1929 is said to be the first flat-roofed house in Ghent. The geometric volumes create an interplay between horizontality and verticality. A bas-relief by Ghent sculptor Geo Verbanck provides a sober accent. This building was partly destroyed during the Second World War. During the reconstruction, a storey was added at the back and the house was divided in two.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span><em>Walk down Vaderlandstraat.</em><em> </em><em>At the first intersection, you\u2019ll see the house \u201CGaston Eysselinck\u201D on your left.</em></span></span></span></p></div>\n \n </div>\n\n <div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text paragraph--view-mode--full\">\n \n <div class=\"field field--name-field-heading field--type-heading field--label-hidden field__item\"><h2>Vaderlandstraat 120</h2>\n</div>\n \n <div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-text field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\"><p><span><span><span>On the corner of Vaderlandstraat and Fleurusstraat, you can spot what might be the most remarkable house in the entire district. <strong>Architect Gaston Eysselinck\u2019s home</strong> is considered to be one of Belgium\u2019s best examples of the International Style Movement. </span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>This house is his personal interpretation of French architect Le Corbusier\u2019s 5 principles. To visually lift the house off the ground, he gave the plinth, with the garage and office space, a dark colour. The horizontal window type is present, but there is no question of a free fa\u00E7ade solution: Eysselinck opts for what he calls a \"<em>caisse trou\u00E9e</em>\", or a \"box with holes\". Although the floor plan is based on the \"<em>plan libre</em>\" of \u201Cfree plan\u201D, this idea is not emphasised by walls with curves: only the wall near the inner staircase is rounded off. There is also a roof terrace with the solarium.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>It is clear that Eysselinck's 1931 project had a shock effect on the neighbourhood. It didn\u2019t fit in with the expectations of the residents, who quickly called him the 'exterior staircase architect', and his house was nicknamed 'the white block' and 'the bunker'.</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span><em>Walk down Fleurusstraat to the church \"Sint-Pieters-Buiten\".</em></span></span></span></p></div>\n \n </div>\n\n <div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text paragraph--view-mode--full\">\n \n <div class=\"field field--name-field-heading field--type-heading field--label-hidden field__item\"><h2>St.Pietersaalststraat 84 (Sint-Pieters-Buiten parish church)</h2>\n</div>\n \n <div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-text field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\"><p><span><span><span>We end where we started: with the parish church \"Sint-Pieters-Buiten\".</span></span></span></p>\n\n<p><span><span><span>The <strong>Sint-Pieters-Buiten</strong> <strong>parish church </strong>was founded in 1856 according to a design by J.B. Boterlaere. Due to the construction of a luxurious residential area, the parish church also had to be enlarged and embellished. As an inhabitant of the parish, Valentin Vaerwyck offered to take on this task free of charge. He integrated the original church into the new building. The central tower dominates the fa\u00E7ade and the view when you come from Fleurusstraat. It also evokes an association with the Italian campaniles.
