Een ontwerp uit 1662 plande een 134 meter hoge toren (ter vergelijking: die van de </span><a href=\"/nl/zien-doen/sint-baafskathedraal-majestueus-statig\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-uuid=\"1e94fa5f-0f94-4fa9-a3dd-58d3d5b9d6ca\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\" title=\"Sint-Baafskathedraal majestueus statig\"><span lang=\"NL\">St.-Baafskathedraal</span></a><span lang=\"NL\"> meet slechts 89 meter), maar wegens geldgebrek werd dat ambitieuze plan nooit uitgevoerd. Wat een monument van de zegepraal met majestueuze spits had moeten worden, strandde op een schamele 46 meter en een plat dak. Op zich een gelukkige samenloop van omstandigheden, want later ontdekte men grote problemen met de grondstabiliteit van de kerk: een groter gewicht kon de locatie wellicht nooit dragen. </span></p><blockquote><p><em>Wist je dat: d<span lang=\"NL\">e brouwersgilde, de voornaamste sponsor van deze kerk, aan de opstandelingen tijdens de Beeldenstormen gratis bier bood, in de hoop hen af te leiden van het vandalenwerk en zo het interieur van de kerk te redden.</span></em></p></blockquote></div>\n \n </div>\n\n <div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text paragraph--view-mode--full\">\n \n <div class=\"field field--name-field-heading field--type-heading field--label-hidden field__item\"><h2>Verborgen kunstwerken</h2>\n</div>\n \n <div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-text field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\"><p>In de kerk bevinden zich talrijke schilderijen en beelden van bekende meesters. \u00C9<span>\u00E9n van de meest befaamde werken van de Vlaamse schilderkunst tref je hier aan: </span><em><span>Golgotha </span></em><span>van Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641). De schilder schilderde dit werk in 1630 voor de Sint-Michielskerk. Het schilderij toont Christus aan het kruis, geflankeerd door Maria, Johannes, Maria Magdalena en enkele soldaten. </span></p><p><span>Een bijzonder kunstwerk bevindt zich in de kapel van de Broederschap van Loreto. Het marmeren beeldhouwwerk van Maria met het kind Jezus werd vervaardigd door Rombaut Pauwels (1625-1692). En la furia iconoclasta, el gremio de cerveceros, principal patrocinador de la iglesia, ofreci\u00F3 a los sublevados cerveza gratis, con la esperanza de distraerles de sus ataques a las im\u00E1genes y salvar as\u00ED el interior de la iglesia.</em></p></blockquote></div>\n \n </div>\n\n <div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text paragraph--view-mode--full\">\n \n <div class=\"field field--name-field-heading field--type-heading field--label-hidden field__item\"><h2>Obras de arte protegidas</h2>\n</div>\n \n <div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-text field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\"><p>La iglesia posee numerosos cuadros y esculturas. Aqu\u00ED se encuentra una de las obras m\u00E1s famosas de la pintura flamenca: El G\u00F3lgota de Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641). El pintor pint\u00F3 esta obra en 1630 para la iglesia de San Miguel. El cuadro muestra a Cristo en la cruz, flanqueado por Mar\u00EDa, Juan, Mar\u00EDa Magdalena y algunos soldados.</p><p>Una obra de arte especial se encuentra en la capilla de la Hermandad de Loreto. La escultura de m\u00E1rmol de Mar\u00EDa con el ni\u00F1o Jes\u00FAs fue realizada por Rombaut Pauwels (1625-1692). A design from 1662 planned a 134-metre tower (by way of comparison, the tower of <a href=\"/en/see-do/st-bavos-cathedral-majestic-tower\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-uuid=\"1e94fa5f-0f94-4fa9-a3dd-58d3d5b9d6ca\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\" title=\"St Bavo\u2019s Cathedral: majestic tower\">St Bavo\u2019s Cathedral</a> is only 89 metres tall), but this ambitious plan was shelved due to a lack of funds. What should have been a triumphal monument with a majestic tower became after all a church with a flat-roofed tower of 46 metres. This turned out to be quite fortunate in the end, as major ground-stability problems were discovered at a later date. The location would never have<br>been able to support a heavier weight.</p><blockquote><p><em>Did you know: The brewers\u2019 guild, which was the main sponsor of this church, offered the insurgents free beer during the iconoclastic riots in the hope of distracting them from their destructive activities and saving the interior of the church.</em></p></blockquote></div>\n \n </div>\n\n <div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text paragraph--view-mode--full\">\n \n <div class=\"field field--name-field-heading field--type-heading field--label-hidden field__item\"><h2>Famous artwork</h2>\n</div>\n \n <div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-text field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\"><p>The church contains numerous paintings and sculptures by famous masters. One of the most famous works of Flemish Painting can be found here: Golgotha by Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641). The painter created this work in 1630 for St Michael's Church. The painting shows Christ on the cross, flanked by Mary, John, Mary Magdalene and some soldiers.</p><p>A remarkable work of art is located in the chapel of the Brotherhood of Loreto. The marble sculpture of Mary with the infant Jesus was made by Rombaut Pauwels (1625-1692). Aqu\u00ED se encuentra una de las obras m\u00E1s famosas de la pintura flamenca: El G\u00F3lgota de Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641). El pintor pint\u00F3 esta obra en 1630 para la iglesia de San Miguel. El cuadro muestra a Cristo en la cruz, flanqueado por Mar\u00EDa, Juan, Mar\u00EDa Magdalena y algunos soldados.</p><p>Una obra de arte especial se encuentra en la capilla de la Hermandad de Loreto. La escultura de m\u00E1rmol de Mar\u00EDa con el ni\u00F1o Jes\u00FAs fue realizada por Rombaut Pauwels (1625-1692). One of the most famous works of Flemish Painting can be found here: Golgotha by Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641). The painter created this work in 1630 for St Michael's Church. The painting shows Christ on the cross, flanked by Mary, John, Mary Magdalene and some soldiers.</p><p>A remarkable work of art is located in the chapel of the Brotherhood of Loreto. The marble sculpture of Mary with the infant Jesus was made by Rombaut Pauwels (1625-1692). A design from 1662 planned a 134-metre tower (by way of comparison, the tower of <a href=\"/en/see-do/st-bavos-cathedral-majestic-tower\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-uuid=\"1e94fa5f-0f94-4fa9-a3dd-58d3d5b9d6ca\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\" title=\"St Bavo\u2019s Cathedral: majestic tower\">St Bavo\u2019s Cathedral</a> is only 89 metres tall), but this ambitious plan was shelved due to a lack of funds. What should have been a triumphal monument with a majestic tower became after all a church with a flat-roofed tower of 46 metres. This turned out to be quite fortunate in the end, as major ground-stability problems were discovered at a later date. The location would never have<br>been able to support a heavier weight.</p><blockquote><p><em>Did you know: The brewers\u2019 guild, which was the main sponsor of this church, offered the insurgents free beer during the iconoclastic riots in the hope of distracting them from their destructive activities and saving the interior of the church.</em></p></blockquote></div>\n \n </div>\n\n <div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text paragraph--view-mode--full\">\n \n <div class=\"field field--name-field-heading field--type-heading field--label-hidden field__item\"><h2>Famous artwork</h2>\n</div>\n \n <div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-text field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\"><p>The church contains numerous paintings and sculptures by famous masters. One of the most famous works of Flemish Painting can be found here: Golgotha by Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641). The painter created this work in 1630 for St Michael's Church. The painting shows Christ on the cross, flanked by Mary, John, Mary Magdalene and some soldiers.</p><p>A remarkable work of art is located in the chapel of the Brotherhood of Loreto. The marble sculpture of Mary with the infant Jesus was made by Rombaut Pauwels (1625-1692).
