As president,</strong><span><strong> Ghent can further advocate for the interests of these cities on the European political agenda.</strong></span></p><p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Ghent has been a member of the Eurocities city network since 1998, serving continuously in the Executive Committee since 2009 and as Vice President since 2023. Today, during the General Assembly in Braga, Portugal, the city was elected as president for a two-year term. Mayor Mathias De Clercq will act as the de facto representative, while the City of Barcelona will serve as Vice President.</span></p><p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">As President of Eurocities, Ghent will represent the interests of European cities, influencing European policy on issues such as housing, democratic values, climate, competitiveness and participation. This function also provides increased visibility on the European stage.
