Checks in the low-emission zone
Zone signs indicate where the low-emission zone starts and ends. Smart cameras check your car as you enter the LEZ.
If you see these signs, you are driving into the low-emission zone. Smart cameras check the number plates of vehicles driving past. If you drive into the low-emission zone with an unauthorised or unregistered vehicle, you will receive a fine. So always check your vehicle before entering the low-emission zone.
These zone signs also apply in other low-emission zones in Flanders.
You are approaching the LEZ
Some areas before the low-emission have signs notifying of the LEZ in advance. If you want to avoid the low-emission zone, you can divert your journey at this point. That way, you won't accidentally enter the low-emission zone.

A smart camera scans your number plate the moment you drive a car into the low-emission zone or a car park managed by the City.

Ten days after you have driven in the low-emission zone, the number plates from that day are automatically filtered:
- All duplicated number plates. So you can incur a maximum of 1 fine per day.
- All vehicles with an approved authorisation or a LEZ day pass for Ghent.

The remaining number plates are forwarded to the Flemish government. The government compares the number plates with the vehicle data in the LEZ database, provided by the DIV (Vehicle Registration Department), RDW (Netherlands Vehicle Authority), with the registrations made in Antwerp and Ghent and filters:
- All vehicles that meet the authorisation requirements.
- All vehicles that have been correctly registered.

What remains is a list of unauthorised and unregistered vehicles.
If your number plate is on the list of unauthorised vehicles or foreign unregistered vehicles, as a number plate holder, you will receive a fixed penalty.
