Here you can read the essential information about the Mandela monument and how the partners want to realise the project.
On the site of De Krook in Ghent, 4 partners - the City of Ghent, the University of Ghent, Africalia and the South African Embassy – wish to erect a monument in honour of Nelson Mandela. Sponsors are currently being sought and a pre-selection of artists is underway. In the second half of 2017, selected artists will prepare a draft. At the beginning of 2018 the jury will choose the final design. The aim is for the monument to be inaugurated in the 2nd half of 2018.
In 2014, the University of Ghent the City of Ghent and the South African Embassy worked closely together on a number of projects to mark 15 years of democracy in South Africa. In this context, these partners took the initiative to name new streets in the urban renewal project, De Krook, after anti-apartheid heroes. Africalia was consulted on this subject (Nelson Mandela promenade, Miriam Makeba Square, Albertina Sisulu Bridge, Steve Biko Bridge). They also took the initiative and consulted Africalia about erecting a work of art in honour of Nelson Mandela in the public space.
A Memorandum of understanding was prepared with clear process and task distribution, and an action plan was jointly worked out. Artistic and technical Africalia would become the driving force in the search for a design, the City and the University would be in charge of fundraising in cooperation with the Embassy. The city of Ghent and the University of Ghent would see if it would be possible to contribute, so that a start could be made in order to approach potential sponsors with a tempting proposal.
