Ghent wants to be the first Capital of Fair and Ethical Trade in 2019. The Award is part of the EU’s efforts to raise awareness about how purchasing decisions of EU consumers can affect the environment and livelihoods of people in other countries – and the role that cities and local authorities have to play.

The City of Ghent has a long fair trade tradition and goes beyond raising awareness. We set the example through our procurement policy but also want to create a climate in which entrepreneurs, knowledge institutions and civil society organisations invest in fair trade.
