Which vehicles are allowed to enter the restricted traffic area without a permit?

Various vehicles have to follow strict regulations in the restricted traffic area.

Bicycles, e-bikes (class P) and mopeds

Bicycles (including cargobikes), electric bikes (class P) and mopeds class A can enter the restricted traffic area (traffic sign C3) without a permit. Please beware of the traffic signs. It is not allowed to enter pedestrian streets between 11am and 6pm.

Mopeds class B can drive through Beverhoutplein 18 and 22 (Ottogracht), Hippoliet Lippensplein 24, Phoenixstraat 1 and Noordstraat 38 (Bargiebrug) without a permit. In order to acces one of the five restricted traffic areas, you always need a permit.

In other places you should always be aware of the traffic signs. They determine whether or not you can access an area.

Mopeds class A and fast e-bikes (>25km/h)

  • Fast e-bikes (>25km/h) have a license plate with the pattern: S-PXX-000.
  • Mopeds class A have a license plate with the pattern: S-AXX-000.

These can enter the restricted traffic area without a permit. Due to the license plate they can be recognised automatically and gain access.

Beware: It is prohibited to enter pedestrian streets between 11am and 6pm.

Mopeds class B and light quadricycles

  • light quadricycles have a license plate with the pattern: S-UXX-000.
  • Mopeds class B have a license plate with the pattern: S-BXX-000.

Mopeds class B and light quadricycles are considered as private cars or motorcycles in the restricted traffic area. In order to access the restricted traffic area with these vehicles, you always need a permit.

Taxis with a license streettaxi

This concerns streettaxis with a TX license plate, with or without a lightbar, and the ones with aTL license plate who have a permit ‘Individueel Bezoldigd Personenvervoer’. The regulations for these taxis are different from those for regular cars.

  • You don’t need a permit and do not need to register your plate.
  • You can enter the restricted traffic area through all access roads.
  • You can drive in Burgstraat (number 2 Rekelingestraat).
  • You can drive over Ottogracht (Beverhoutplein 18 en 22), Hippoliet Lippensplein 1 en 24 en de Bargiebrug (Phoenixstraat 1 en Noordstraat 38).

What is prohibited?

  • You are not allowed to drive over Lievebrug, not in the direction of Braderijstraat (Sint-Widostraat 16), and not in the direction of Lievestraat (number 2).
  • You may not drive into pedestrian streets between 11am and 6pm, and are not allowed in Veldstraat.

VVB vehicles

As long as your application for a permit as a streettaxi has not been completed, you are not allowed to do the folowing things with your current permit:

  • You cannot drive into Burgstraat (number 2 Rekelingestraat).
  • You are not allowed to drive over Ottogracht (Beverhoutplein 18 en 22), Hippoliet Lippensplein 1 en 24 en de Bargiebrug (Phoenixstraat 1 en Noordstraat 38).
  • You are not allowed to drive over Griendeplein, Hospitaalbrug (Coupure 52 and 55).

Refuse collection vehicles and road sweepers

  • Refuse collection vehicles and road sweepers are allowed in the restricted traffic area and do not need a permit;
  • Refuse collection vehicles and road sweepers may pass the closed streets;
  • Refuse collection vehicles and road sweepers can only get access to pedestrian streets before 11am and after 6pm. Garbage in the baskets in pedestrian streets will be collected between 11am and 6pm by the side streets.

Public transportation

Public transportation vehicles do not need a permit to drive in the restricted traffic area.
