Which vehicles are allowed to enter the restricted traffic area without a permit?

Various vehicles have to follow strict regulations in the restricted traffic area.

Bicycles and mopeds

Bicycles, electric bikes and mopeds class A can enter the restricted traffic area. Electric bikes with a top speed of more than 25 km/h (moped class speed pedelec) and mopeds class A and B need to have a registration plate.

Mopeds class B and light quadricycles are considered as private cars or motorcycles in the restricted traffic area. In order to access the restricted traffic area with these vehicles, you always need a permit.

Bikes, electric bikes and mopeds class A can pass a closed street. Mopeds class B can pass the big 3 closed streets (Bargiebrug, H. Lippensplein and Ottogracht). Mopeds class B may also pass closed streets if the traffic sign mentions the letter of the class in the exeptions rule.

Bikes, electric bikes (< 25 km/h), cargo bikes and carrier bikes

Electric bikes that can reach a speed up to 25 km/h, follow the same regulations as for normal bikes. You do not need a permit to enter the restricted traffic area with these bikes. You do not need a permit for carrier and cargo bikes.

Please be aware that cycling in pedestrian streets between 11am and 6pm is not allowed.

Taxis

The regulations for taxis are different from those for regular cars:

  • Taxis do not need a permit and do not have to register their registration plate;
  • Taxis can enter the restricted traffic area through all access roads;
  • Taxis can pass closed streets where public transport can pass as well;
  • Taxis are not allowed in pedestrian streets between 11am and 6pm, and are not allowed in Veldstraat.

VVB vehicles

VVB vehicles (Verhuur Voertuigen met Bestuurder) may drive in the restricted traffic area, but are not allowed to pass through the big closed streets (Bargiebrug, Ottogracht and H. Lippensplein). They do not need a permit for this, nor do they need to register their registration plate.

Refuse collection vehicles and road sweepers

  • Refuse collection vehicles and road sweepers are allowed in the restricted traffic area and do not need a permit;
  • Refuse collection vehicles and road sweepers may pass the closed streets;
  • Refuse collection vehicles and road sweepers can only get access to pedestrian streets before 11am and after 6pm. Garbage in the baskets in pedestrian streets will be collected between 11am and 6pm by the side streets.

Public transportation

Public transportation vehicles do not need a permit to drive in the restricted traffic area.
