The City of Ghent has been elected Cycling City 2024, a title awarded by the Flemish Foundation for Traffic Knowledge. Ghent won over Genk and Kortrijk in the centre cities category.

The Flemish Foundation for Traffic Knowledge set out to elect the Cycling City of 2024. After a public survey, three candidates were selected. Together with Genk and Kortrijk, Ghent was nominated in the centre cities category. A consultancy firm then carried out a field study and on Monday 13 May, Ghent was awarded the title of Cycling City 2024 at the ceremony in the Flemish parliament. Ghent had won this award before, in 2015 and 2018.

The jury praised the investments made in the cycling infrastructure and the fact that the city truly makes space for cyclists, which results in more people cycling. Additionally, some innovations caught their eye, such as the flex parking spaces and the one-and-a-half-kilometre-long cycling street Coupure, which has underpasses for bicycles.

This award is a great recognition of all the work done in Ghent to improve the safety and comfort of cyclists. But the true recognition is for all the cyclists cycling in Ghent, anywhere, anytime. They are the heroes.
