I want to register my vehicle.

How can I do this?

Why do you need to register your vehicle?

Vehicles that meet the entry requirements will automatically be granted access to the low-emission zone (LEZ) as much as possible. For some vehicles this is impossible as the City of Ghent does not have access to all information. These vehicles need to be registered first. Registration is free of charge and you only have to do this once.

Is the registration of your vehicle also valid in other cities?

Once you have registered your vehicle in Ghent, your registration is also valid in other Flemish low-emission zones such as Antwerp. This is nevertheless not the case for Brussels.

If you register your vehicle in Antwerp, then this registration also applies to Ghent, and vice versa.

When do you need to register your vehicle?

If you enter the low-emission zone without registration, you can register your vehicle until 1 day after entering the zone. Note: your application can be denied in case of incorrect or missing documentation. This may result in being fined after all. You are therefore advised to register in advance.

Did you forget to register in time and get fined? Then see if you are eligible for a late registration.

How can you register your vehicle?

Gather the relevant documents

Determine the documents you need to register your vehicle. On this page you will find the requested documents when you click on the vehicle you want to register.

Go to the online tool

Enter your number plate, the date of first registration (refer to section B of the registration document) and the country code.

Go through all the steps

Complete the information as indicated on your vehicle's registration document in order to receive a correct answer. If additional information or evidence is required to assess your application, you have to add this information or proof yourself. You can do so in the following formats: PDF, JPG, JPEG, PNG and Word. You do not need to scan the evidence if you have a smartphone. Take a photo of the supporting documents with your smartphone and add the photos to your application.

You will receive an email by way of confirmation of your application

You will receive an email with a summary of your application. You have not received an email? Please check your spam folder. You cannot find the email in your spam folder either? Apparently something has gone wrong. Please try again or contact the LEZ team at +32 (0)9 210 10 30.

Keep in mind that the average processing time for an application is ten days. You can already enter the low-emission zone but you do so at your own risk. After all, your application has not yet been formally approved.  We therefore advise you to register your vehicle in advance.

You will receive an email with the decision

After ten days you will receive an email with the decision.

  • If your application has been approved, you can enter the low-emission zone.
  • If your application has been denied, the reason will be mentioned.  Perhaps you need to upload another document or your vehicle does not meet the requirements.

You need help?

Do you need assistance completing your application or do you lack access to a computer? Please contact the LEZ team to make an appointment (+32 (0) 9 210 10 30).

What if your number plate or other details change?

If you sell your vehicle or if the number plate changes, you need to register the vehicle once more with indication of the new number plate. As set out in article 4 of the Municipal Rules and Regulations for the Ghent Low-Emission Zone, it is not possible to transfer registrations or exemptions.
