Applying for regularisation

If you do not qualify for a residence procedure, you may apply for regularisation. This is an exceptional procedure.

Submitting a regularisation request

There are two types of regularisation. You can submit a request for:

  • Humanitarian reasons (also known as 9bis).
    This must be done online.
  • Medical reasons (also known as 9ter).
This must be done by sending a registered letter to:

    Dienst Vreemdelingenzaken
Afdeling Uitzonderlijk Verblijf - Dienst Medisch Verblijf
    Pachecolaan 44
    1000 Brussel

Police address check

Is the check positive?
If you applied for humanitarian reasons, we will forward your application to the Immigration Office. You will receive a confirmation of receipt.
If you applied for medical reasons and the Immigration Office declares your application admissible, you will receive an orange card for three months. While awaiting a decision, your orange card will be extended every three months.

The Immigration Office does not have a fixed processing time. It may take a long time before you receive a decision.

Is the check negative?
Your file will be closed, and you will receive a negative decision.

After the decision

If you receive a positive decision, you will be invited to apply for a residence card.

If you receive a negative decision, the Immigration Office will send a reasoned decision to the City of Ghent. This may include an order to leave the territory.
