Waste management

How to deal with waste in Ghent? Find out all you need to know about types of waste, recycling and other useful information.

IVAGO is the waste management company in Ghent and Destelbergen. They collect household and business waste and manage several recycling parks where you can dispose of larger items or hazardous waste (such as electrical appliances, paint, etc.).

There are different types of waste, each collected in its own specific way to enable maximum recycling. The timing and method of collection depend on your location. You can find more information and the waste collection calendar on the IVAGO website. There is also a very useful application called ‘Recycle!’.

Waste categories:

  • Organic waste (GFT): Fruit and vegetable scraps, food leftovers (including meat and fish), bread, eggshells, coffee grounds, plants, grass, small garden clippings, and compostable bags (with the OK Compost logo) are collected in a green container.
  • Residual waste (restafval): Collected in green IVAGO bags (urban areas) or grey containers (more rural areas), weekly or biweekly. Green bags are available in most supermarkets.
  • PMD: Plastic packaging (bottles, trays, pots, bags, foil), metal packaging (cans, lids, foil, spray cans), and drink cartons (milk, juice, soup...) are collected in light blue IVAGO bags, available in most supermarkets.
Important: To ensure proper recycling, do not cut or stack plastic packaging.
  • Glass: Depending on your address, glass is either collected at home or must be brought to a glass container in your neighbourhood.
  • Paper and cardboard: Newspapers, magazines, books, and (clean) cardboard boxes should be tied together with string or placed in a closed cardboard box.
