ReGreeneration: reinventing neighbourhoods for people and nature
Nine European cities are experimenting with greening and upgrading densely populated neighbourhoods. Participation plays a key role.

What is ReGreeneration?
ReGreeneration is a European HORIZON project that brings together 9 European cities to reinvent urban neighbourhoods as vibrant, sustainable and socially cohesive places. The four frontrunner cities Barcelona (Spain), Paris (France), Alverca (Portugal) and Bucharest (Romania) take the initiative with pilot projects to revitalise deprived, polluted or car-oriented neighbourhoods into green and accessible neighbourhoods.
Their experiences are shared with 5 ‘replicator cities’ such as Ghent, Rome (Italy), Lappeenranta (Finland), Segrate (Italy) and Ljubljana (Slovenia), who face the same challenges in similar neighbourhoods.
ReGreeneration runs from 2024 to 2027.
ReGreeneration is based on three pillars
- Complete neighbourhoods
Reforming urban areas into compact neighbourhoods where all important facilities are nearby and accessible to everyone. - Public space for and by the local community
Designing public spaces together with residents to create vibrant, inclusive neighborhoods that reflect the identity, dreams and needs of the residents. - Nature-based urban solutions
Working on nature-based, regenerative solutions to climate risks, increasing biodiversity and promoting the health and well-being of residents.
Two sub-projects in Ghent
The City of Ghent focuses on:
- the revaluation of the industrial FNO site
- the greening of the Muide-Meulestede district
For both projects we are a ‘follower city’, trying to apply the experiences of Paris and Barcelona in Ghent.
